Feline DNA Parentage Evaluation
 |
Testing Fee: $38/feline
Turnaround Time: 10 working days |
Using PCR technology, the correct parentage can be definitively established by comparing the DNA profile of an offspring to that of an alleged set of parents.
Feline parentage evaluation is a useful service for breeders who:
- Have doubt about the parentage of a recent litter.
- Suspect that the female may have been exposed to multiple males during her heat cycle.
- Did not witness the mating.
- Simply want peace of mind.
Cat owners can collect DNA samples themselves quickly and painlessly using buccal (cheek) swabs for collecting loose skin cells. Cats of any age can be tested.
Once your samples arrive at our laboratory, the DNA testing process begins. Each sample is labeled individually and given a unique DNA ID number.
DDC's highly developed DNA extraction and testing methods using PCR and state-of-the-art genetic analyzers are applied- the same reliable technology DDC uses for its human and canine applications
Within 10 business days we will email a Feline DNA Parentage Report showing whether the parent in question was confirmed as the biological parent. You will also receive a laboratory datasheet which includes the DNA profile of each cat tested in the evaluation.
Veterinary Diagnostics Center requires that DNA samples from both the sire and dam be included in a parentage evaluation. If the sire or dam is not available for testing, the client should opt for extended testing using additional DNA markers. In addition, if an alleged parent has close relatives who may also be candidates for parentage, it is important this be communicated to Veterinary Diagnostics Center prior to testing. If these recommendations are not followed, the power to exclude an alleged parent will be compromised, thereby increasing the chance that the alleged parent will be falsely included as a biological parent.
Please Note:
Results are based on data obtained from analysis of unique DNA loci in accordance with the standards and protocols set forth by Veterinary Diagnostics Center. The accuracy of parentage interpretations is based on the information and samples provided by the client. Veterinary Diagnostics Center does not assume responsibility for errors due to mislabeled or incorrectly sampled submissions. Conclusions concerning parentage (in the absence of any supplemental client information) are derived based on a mating of two unrelated individuals. DNA Parentage Testing will NOT provide information about the breed make-up of a cat. |
